What Is Paronychia And How Does It Develop?
Paronychia is a common nail condition in the periungual tissue, the area surrounding the fingernail or toenail. It can be triggered by various factors, including trauma, irritation or infections when a bacteria enters through the broken skin or injury. Leading to visible inflammation, pain or discomfort, and redness at the nail fold. In addition, the infected area can even form a pus-filled blister (abscess), especially if it is from a bacterial or fungal infection. Paronychia infection can be classified in two different types which are either acute or chronic. Acute paronychia can go less than 6 weeks that usually appears as a sudden, very painful swelling with warmth and redness. Meanwhile, chronic paronychia presents longer than six weeks and develops slowly causing gradual swelling, tenderness, and redness that is commonly linked due to repeated exposure to moisture or irritants.
Acute and chronic paronychia can happen for anyone of all ages but is more common in people who are always exposed to water, irritants, biting nails, frequent sucking on a finger, and those with certain skin conditions. Although paronychia is not serious and can be treated at home in a few days, a mild case can turn into something more critical. Allowing it to infect and spread to the entire finger or toes with possible infection recurrence.
